2005 Catherine Vale Dolcetto

2005 Catherine Vale DolcettoThe pioneering plantings of Dolcetto at Catherine Vale are unique in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.  The initial cuttings were sourced from Bests at Great Western.

The delicate smoky almond and earthy aromas have undertones of berry and white peach and some clove and oriental spice is the result of fermentation and maturation in American oak.

Soft mouth entry and acidity herald rich mid palate fruit flavours of anise and fine tannin.  The finish is dry and oaky with subtle cherry flavours and the wine is excellent with Asian and Mediterranean cuisine.

For variation try it lightly chilled as a luncheon red.

Our Dolcetto is named in memory of Bill’s Mother Gabrielle Lawson

The Dolcetto Vines produce larger than usual bunches often reminding one of table grapes. They are sweet to taste, easy to pick and ripen early.

The grapes need more care than other varieties. They have a tendency to overcrop by sending out 2 to 3 canes from each bud almost from the beginning. We cut off the extra bunches and leave the extra vegetative growth to assist with the ripening process.

2005 Catherine Vale DolcettoReviews:

John Lewis from the Newcastle Herald wrote in his Weekender Lifestyle and Entertainment page that he “particularly enjoyed the crisp tropical flavoured 2005 Verdelho” He also wrote “The 2005 Gabrielle Dolcetto is a light-bodied red that would be great with pasta or Greek and Lebanese dishes.  It has aromas of rhubarb and blueberries and shows zingy raspberry flavour on the front of the palate.  Lemon grass and anise fruit characters and light coconutty oak combine on the middle palate. Lingering berry flavours and minty tannins meld at the finish”
